We’re pleased to share a new report from our Protein Catalyst initiative assessing the opportunities and challenges of including winter camelina meal in animal feed. Led by AURI and informed by animal nutritionists, researchers, and supply chain experts, the report provides a comprehensive look at camelina meal’s nutritional profile, market potential, and regulatory pathways.
Winter camelina offers a promising new option for diversifying feed ingredients while supporting soil health and more diverse crop rotations. As the report notes, “even limited inclusion rates into livestock feeding programs can have a significant impact on the economic viability of crops such as winter camelina.” Early findings indicate that camelina meal produced on a commercial scale could enable even higher inclusion rates across a range of animal species.
The report also highlights needed next steps, including investment in additional feeding trials, expanded regulatory definitions and continued value chain collaboration to support commercialization. This work is essential to positioning winter camelina as a scalable feed ingredient and optimizing the value of the crop.
A special thanks to Cargill for their collaboration and to the McKnight Foundation and Builders Vision for the financial support. Access the full report.
